Who We Are

Mona - Our Story

MONA, originally the Maclin Overseas Nurses Alliance, was founded in January 1999 by eight Guyanese American nurses who completed their training at the Dr. Charles Roza School of Nursing in Linden, Guyana, South America.  These founding members recognized the needs of Guyanese community hospitals and clinics and formed MONA as a vehicle to give back to a country which gave them their start in life.  Over the years, MONA grew to include members and supporters from many different professions and careers united in a desire to make a difference to communities in need.

Through donations, fundraising events, and the hard work of volunteers MONA endeavors to:

  • Improve health care delivery to the citizens of various communities throughout Guyana by providing medical supplies, equipment and community health education.
  • Support the academic ambitions of selected Guyanese students by providing scholarships for the purchase of uniforms, books and school supplies.
  • Foster an appreciation of Guyanese culture in American born descendants of Guyanese immigrants and others who have an interest in learning about Guyana, through family friendly events and community projects.

MONA is a 501c3 non-profit organization.  It is organized and operated exclusively for charitable and educational purposes in the United States and abroad.
